- Slogans
- Famous voice overs and actors
- Humour
- Catchy Jingles / songs
- Something that sticks in your mind and you can remember
A good example of adverts that stick in your mind and are successful are 'Go Compare' and 'Compare the meerkat' car insurance adverts.
Why do people make adverts?
To brand their product to get it well known to the public in order for it to sell and it to make money or create awareness of it. For example the Cadbury eye brows advert.
When making an advert they need to think about many steps
- Target audience brief
- Brief of product
- Costs
- Regulations
- Production
- Story Boarding
- Editing
- Representation
Working title and Product description.
In our group consisting of Amber, Elliot, Rianna and myself, we had the option to chose between two products to advertise for our advert we have to make. Those options were a chest of drawers and a saddle testing seat. Our group chose the drawers. We came up with this decision because we all agreed that they would be wanted by a larger audience as nearly every household in the UK have drawers, so our advert will be more successful because everyone may need drawers. Also the drawers that Steven designed look new, fresh and modern and this fact will help sell the product because it will appeal.

This is a picture of the chest of drawers our group is going to advertise.
Project name; Our group is going to call the chest of drawers we are gong to advertise, Blockmiester drawers. Elliot decided on this name which we all agreed to.
Product Description; The chest of drawers will be a brand new, hand made, shiny and white product that will feature one main drawer where you can put items in. On top of the drawers there will be space to store items on. For example a woman/ teenage girl could put their make-up and Mirror etc on top. Other examples you can put on the top of the drawers are lamps or a laptop. The drawers will contain a long, slim silver handle to open them up with, and it will be easier because the handle will be easy to grip. These drawers will fit in well with a house and look suitable for a living room / bedroom. A bad feature of the product will be that it takes up a lot of space which may put off a lot of potential customers.
The reason why our group has decided to choose this product to advertise is because it looks appealing and the drawers look like something that people will be interested in buying as it is a vital object in nearly all homes around the world. The design will suggest that it was produced for the use of teenagers and young adults. This is because it doesn't look as if an older age group will find this interesting and may want more storage speace with a bigger set of drawers.

Roles and responsibilities within the group
I was not here for the filming of this video due to illness, so when I returned, Rianna filmed me talking about my role in the advert which was edited in to the video and uploaded when it is put together.
In the advertisement of the chest of drawers, I am responsible for planning, schedule and diary. This means my task is to ensure that everything is in check for the advertisement. I decided to take on this role because I have good organisational skills and record keeping and decided I can show good leadership skills by using this in this role as part of a team.
My first role of planning is to check with the drama teacher that the atrium, our chosen location was avalible for when we wanted to film. As it is available I added it to the diary for May 18th 2012 to complete filming.
Rihanna Dulake's role is to check everyone's final evaluations, making sure they are all done and correct. Rianna chose this role because she is good at structuring out evaluations the best and decided to give the rest of the team the advise that they needed if they were struggling with the final evaluation.
Our group is planning on having the advert all filmed, edited and evaluated by the end of May 2012.
We need to make a timeline to work by to ensure everything is all done and the tasks are set on time to ensure we finish beofre the deadline.
This below is the plan of what we are aiming to achieve in the months that follows
March
- Planning
- Equipment schedule and diary
- Production schedule and diary
- Looking at locations to film the advert in around the school
April
- Risk assesments and hazards
- Script and storyboard
- Working practice
- Camera and sound
- Filming and editing
May
- Decisions and solutions
- Evaluation of production
- Evaluation of final product
Product Costs
What kind of products would our company have to pay for?
If the advert was being made and filmed by a big international production company it would be far more expensive than our advertisment that was being filmed in school. In addition to this, we don't have to pay for equipment used in making the advertisement as it is provided to us whenever we need it as long as we book the time to use it with our group and make sure no other group is using it.
If we were a big company though, we would have to pay for
- Designing materials
Ream o fA4 paper £2.50
Black biros 10 £2.00
Pencils 10 £1.50
Rulers 2 £1.50
Total - £7.50
- Labour time
2 Actors paid at £50.00 per hour for four hours with a total of £400.00
camera and production crew :- .
Note: these prices are day rates, based on a 10 hour day, shooting DV CAM. For other formats such as Digi Beta, DV CAM, HDCAM, HDV, and shooting in NTSC.
- Overhead costs
- Packaging costs
- DVD / Burning costs
- Tripod
- Camera
As we are at school the products we needed which were provided to us were:
- Video Camera. The type of camera we used in filming was a canon HD CMOS

As we are at school the products we needed which were provided to us were:
- Video Camera. The type of camera we used in filming was a canon HD CMOS
- Tripod to help hold up the camera and keep it steady whilst filming
- Lighting (we used natural light as we filmed in atrium which had a glass roof and the light from the roof was shining through) we didnt use any electrical lights in the class as we did not need any.
- The props was the main point of the advertisement and what it was all about. They were the drawers themselves.
- Editing software, which we did on the macs in the media suite after the filming.
- Camera batteries just in case the batteries ran out whilst we are filming
- Microphones were inclued with the camera
- USB to upload from camera to computer so its ready to edit.
Ideas for location of filming advertisement
As part of a task set for our group, Amber and I went around the school looking for potential classrooms to film our advertisemnt of the chest of drawers.

Whilst out looking around the school for rooms that would be a good place to film in, we had each 2 sheets to fill in. We had to check the lighting is suitable and if there are any safety objects that could make the room unsuitable to film in. This is called the recce. We came across these and shortlisted these rooms for the filming to take place in them.

Treatment
Treatment is something that creates an effect on the audience and how you do it. For example you can use sound, lighting, camera angles, space in advert, styles of acting e.g. cheseey and over the top, genre and editing e.g. short takes.
To start with, we have discussed using music which will give the advert a cheesy feel to it.
The lighting will be bright and natural coming from the roof and its aim is to create a happy atmosphere for the audience as it won't be dark and gloomy.
The camera angle we used to film was the 180 degrees rule. This means filming with the camera straight in front so it looks like they are talking to each other.
There was alot of space around the atrium as it is not a crowded room and I had booked it out the day before for our group to use for the last 3 periods of the day for the filming. We placed the chest of Drawers in the middle of the room so there was room to film around it.
The style of acting was meant to be forced and cheesy to appeal to the audience to bring them in and to make it rememorable to them in a comic funny way. It was meant to be over the top.
The genre of the advert is comedy where we try and make it as funny as possible for the audience to watch because they are more likely to remember the product that is being sold. This means that more product is likely to be sold
.
The editing of the advert was in short takes to keep the advert fast paced to maintain interest.
The actors we used were asked to act in over the top, cheesy American style accents to give the audience some interest.

Production Schedule
Rianna, Amber, Elliot and I decided we were going to film this advertisement on Friday 18th May 2012. The reason we chose to film then was because it is a day we were all free and had free lessons avaliable to film.
We do not need any other extra equipment because it has been provided by the school.
Missing Personnel
We have got actors to act in the advert for us as we are not acting in it. If any of the actors were missing, one of our group agreed to stand in. Fortunately everyone was presant but unfortunately Elliot and I were absent from filming as Elliot was away with sickness and I had a meeting in school with the career's advisor.
Broken Equipment
If there is any broken equipment we will replace it and pay for the damages if caused by us.
Bad Weather
The weather would not affect our filming as it is being filmed inside.
